Pros and Cons of Biometrics

Biometrics has its own pros and cons. Here, we will learn the Pros and Cons of Biometrics as well. But first, learn what it is below.

What is Biometrics?

Biometrics is the statistical analysis of biological data and its application to general purposes. To make it simpler, we use biometrics mainly for identification and access control. As the development of technology advances further and further, the use of biometrics is increasing as well.

One of the prime examples of biometrics is Voice recognition. Face Recognition, Fingerprint Scanner, Iris Recognition and so much more. The system is so used intensively that we can find the biometric scanner in our smartphone devices. Our smartphone devices are so developed that we can use them as biometric devices for face recognition or fingerprint recognition and others. Those biometric systems allow in maintaining security. Also, it is not allowing any unknown sources to view or temper our valuable data.

But biometrics is much more than securing smartphone devices. They allow in identifying persons using DNA, health checkups using heart rate sensors, public security, and many others. For this purpose, most of the data from biometrics devices are stored in the database so they can be compared and analyzed. After analyzing they can be used in the future for multiple purposes.

Still, there are some advantages and disadvantages to biometrics. And, let’s list the Pros and Cons of Biometrics out:

Pros of Biometrics:

1. Security purpose:

We can use our fingerprints or retina as passwords to gain access to our valuable data. Since the traditional passwords or security can be faked, biometric passwords are unique and cannot be replicated. Due to this reason, there is drastically enhancement in security.

2. Uses are more convenient:

Biometrics may seem complex but is very convenient to use and easy as well. To make it more clear, fingerprints in our smartphones need only one occasion to first verify fingerprint. Once done then we can continuously use them again and again.

3. Health benefits:

Some of the biometric devices as the heart rate sensor, blood oximeter, and other devices help to check any type of anomalies in our body. It helps to detect any problem beforehand. Thus, it helps in maintaining our health by knowing the problem in advance.

4. Helps on authentication:

Biometrics can identify a person more accurately with help of its sensors. Faked retina scan and fingerprint scan are not possible. It is unique to everyone. Hence, it helps in the authentication of the right person. The most common use of biometric is for attendance in firms or insecurity.

Cons of Biometrics:

1. Implementation is expensive:

Using biometrics in all fields is a bit expensive. Though big organizations might be able to use it, still they are very few. The devices are costly and they are not easily available too.

2. Privacy problems:

Still breaching is possible for some biometric databases. Once that happens it can jeopardize the privacy of the client. The database may contain some sensitive information about users which may cause problems later.

Final Verdict:

With all those advantages and disadvantages discussed, we still believe that the pros of biometrics are more than the cons. We might probably use biometric authentication in our smartphones as well. And considering the trend of technology use of biometrics will only increase. And the development of a new biometric device will only increase the accuracy of the result and reduce the drawbacks. So, these are the Pros and Cons of Biometrics.
